Our lives are built atop unfathomable piles of generational wealth.

Generations of innovators took us from hunter-gathering, to subsistence farming, to the industrial revolution to...whatever this is. Each generation improves our understanding of science and our use of technology a little bit. Part of what makes a city so valuable is its compounding infrastructure investments across generations.

I read that 250 years ago about half of children died before age 5, and then I look at my two sons and think of how incomplete my life would be without both of them.

I didn't develop the vaccines, or discover the antibiotics, or make the clean water and vitamin-rich foods that have so contributed to their health.

In a 2006 EconTalk interview, Walter Williams (1936-2020) described taking a class from legendary economist Armen Alchian (1914-2013). Alchian pointed to the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge and posed the question, "Why do current generations build things that will long outlast their lives?"

Tia Leo went home this week. Luana's aunt stayed with us and helped us take care of the kids while we were in Brazil. She has continued helping us while visiting here in the US. She is an amazing woman. We will miss her greatly.

I miss her already.

Family Photo: Games Calvin and Lawrence built a chessboard out of K'NEX. We've played on it a few times. It works pretty good, except when the chess pieces fall through the holes in the K'NEX pieces. We could probably solve this by building bigger chess pieces out of K'NEX pieces instead of using our tiny travel set pieces. Maybe we'll get there someday. Family Photo: Effort Over the last month, Calvin and Lawrence have participated in the weekly soccer clinic at Cal Poly. The clinic is a free community program where the kids get to practice soccer, coached by the Cal Poly soccer players, on the same field where the Cal Poly teams play their games.
